Midlothian Fire Department Summer Safety Tips

*  It is believed in good faith that the following content can be found in the Summer 2009 edition of the Tartan Tidings and is for general reference and/or research purposes only.  For further information regarding the information listed here, please contact The Village of Midlothian in Midlothian, Illinois. *

BBQ Grills

1.    Make sure they are in good working order
2.    As of April 1, 2002, refillable propane gas tanks must be equipped with an Overfill Prevention Device (OPD) in order to be refilled.  This applies to refillable gas cylinders manufactured before September 30, 1998 that are 4-40 pounds in capacity. Residents with older propane tanks are encouraged to take them to their nearest propane dealer who can either change the valve or accept the old tank for recycling or proper disposal.  Do NOT attempt to dispose of old propane tanks with household waste.
3.    Check to make sure there are no leaks of propane or natural gas
4.    Check to make certain all controls are in good condition.
5.    Do not use matches or lighters to check for leaks.  With all valves on the appliances turned off, slowly open the cylinder valve by turning the handle counter-clockwise
6.    Do not smoke while handling or transporting propane cylinders.

Pool Safety

1.    Know where your kids are at all times
2.    Do not dive into the shallow areas of the pool.
3.    Always have an adult supervisor on guard.
4.    Make certain the area around the pool is free of all electrical exposure.

Open Burning

1.    Open burning is prohibited in the Village of Midlothian and within all of Cook County.  You are subject to a citation for violating this prohibition.
